3D Deformity Analysis

Precise computer-assisted analysis of limb and skeletal deformity — giving our surgeons an accurate three-dimensional map of the problem before developing a corrective plan.

Why 3D Analysis Matters

Skeletal deformity — whether caused by trauma, congenital conditions, metabolic bone disease, or prior surgery — is rarely confined to a single plane. A limb that appears bowed when viewed from the front may also be rotated or angulated when viewed from the side. Conventional two-dimensional X-ray analysis captures only part of the picture.

3D deformity analysis uses CT-derived digital bone models to measure deformity across all three planes simultaneously. This allows surgeons to identify the true apex of the deformity, calculate the precise correction required, and plan the location and orientation of corrective osteotomies with a level of accuracy that is simply not achievable through conventional radiograph assessment.

At Sydney Advanced Orthopaedics, 3D deformity analysis is an integral part of our approach to complex limb reconstruction — particularly for conditions involving significant angular deformity, rotational malalignment, or multi-level pathology.

The Analysis Process

Imaging

Long-leg CT scans and standing alignment X-rays are obtained to capture the full extent of deformity. Where appropriate, rotational profiles are measured.

Digital Modelling

CT data is used to generate a three-dimensional digital model of your bones. Deformity measurements are taken across all three anatomical planes.

Surgical Planning

The correction plan is defined within the 3D model — specifying the exact osteotomy site, cutting angles, and correction vector required to restore normal alignment.

Conditions Commonly Assessed

Post-traumatic malalignment

Congenital limb deformity

Rickets and metabolic bone disorders

Blount's disease

Fibular hemimelia and tibial hemimelia

Angular deformity following growth arrest

Rotational deformity of the femur or tibia

Deformity following failed osteotomy
