Biography
Dr Philip Markham is an orthopaedic surgeon with a particular focus on shoulder surgery — including shoulder replacement, rotator cuff reconstruction, and shoulder instability — alongside hip and knee replacement and sports knee surgery. He manages the full spectrum of upper and lower limb orthopaedic conditions, from sports injuries in active patients to complex joint replacement and revision surgery.
Dr Markham completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB). He undertook his orthopaedic surgical training in Australia across the Sydney teaching hospital network, including Royal North Shore Hospital, Nepean Hospital, and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2016, followed by Fellowship of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA).
He subsequently completed two subspecialty fellowships. In Canberra, he focused on primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement. On the Central Coast, he undertook advanced training in reconstructive shoulder surgery — the area that has become the centrepiece of his clinical practice. Together, these fellowships gave him a broad upper and lower limb skillset with particular depth in shoulder reconstruction and complex joint replacement.
Dr Markham consults at Sydney Advanced Orthopaedics at Macquarie University Hospital and Norwest Private Hospital on scheduled clinic days, and also sees patients at his clinics in Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Gosford. Appointments through SAO can be arranged via our rooms directly.
