A Different Approach to Complex Care

Complex Limb
Reconstruction Clinic

Every fortnight, our team of specialist surgeons convenes to review the most complex cases together — in front of the patient and their family.

The Challenge with Complex Cases

Complex limb and orthopaedic conditions rarely fall neatly within a single specialty. A patient with severe limb deformity following trauma may require input from a reconstructive surgeon, a bone infection specialist, and an osseointegration expert. Under the conventional model, that patient faces months of separate appointments — with each specialist forming their own view in isolation.

Diagnoses diverge. Treatment plans conflict. The patient is left navigating a fragmented system with no unified path forward.

What We Do Differently

The Complex Limb Reconstruction Clinic runs every second Thursday at Sydney Advanced Orthopaedics. Rather than a single surgeon reviewing a case in isolation, our multi-disciplinary team — including specialists in limb reconstruction, osseointegration, trauma, foot and ankle, and joint replacement — convenes together around a single patient.

The discussion happens in the room, in front of the patient and their family. Questions are raised and answered in real time. The result is a single, unified plan — not a compromise between separate opinions, but a genuinely collaborative clinical decision made by the right people at the same time.

This approach eliminates diagnostic fragmentation, compresses months of separate referrals into a single session, and gives the patient complete transparency into how their care has been planned.

How It Works

Step 1

Initial Consultation

Your case begins with a consultation with one of our specialist surgeons. They assess your condition, review imaging, and gather your full history.

Step 2

MDT Referral

If your surgeon determines the case warrants a team review — due to complexity, multiple specialties involved, or unusual anatomy — you are scheduled for the next available Clinic session.

Step 3

The Clinic Session

You attend the fortnightly Clinic with your family or support person. The assembled team reviews your case together, discusses options openly, and agrees on a unified plan — in your presence.

Who This Clinic Is For

The Complex Limb Reconstruction Clinic is designed for patients whose conditions involve significant complexity, unusual anatomy, or multi-system involvement. Conditions commonly reviewed include:

Complex lower limb deformity

Limb salvage following tumour or severe trauma

Osteomyelitis with structural bone loss

Failed prior reconstruction requiring revision

Multi-level osseointegration planning

Complex limb lengthening or realignment

Congenital or acquired limb deformity

Cases requiring concurrent specialty input

If you are unsure whether your case is appropriate, please contact us and one of our surgeons will advise.
